Commentary on Fare
BY JADE BASKET

Mountain SKYLIGHT's Linguistic Image can spark insight into what shines through each hexagram as each one holds a spiritual opportunity and promise behind and within its arrangement of solid and broken lines. When we read the English "name-label" for a hexagram such as oracle or fare we might be tempted to stick with the first, immediate thoughts about the word as commonly used in daily life instead of peering deeper, allowing the hexagram to reveal itself as a synthesizing spiritual bridge.

In the linguistic sense, this proffered bridge instrumentally connects East to West using the basic elements of sound, alphabetic construction, and intuitive meaning so what appear to be differences between racial or cultural blood-consciousness can harmoniously blend or synthesize with one another.
In the highest sense, this invisible bridge has the potential to connect soul to spirit, which is the ultimate promise in and behind every hexagram of the I Ching, but most transparent in Song or Fare. When Westerners hear the word 'fare', thoughts of restaurant menus or airplane fares may arise. To the awakened mind-heart, 'fare' or any other linguistic image word-name will extend multi-dimensionally as the vertical path that ever and always leads to God.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Beginning with Fare's Western etymology relating to food, it can mean physical foods like pizza and hamburgers; emotional foods like a comforting hug from your mother; mental foods like memorizing and quoting facts and figures; and spiritual foods, such as prayer, meditation, and surrender. Speaking to conveyance or travel: fare can mean the cost of a train passage; the sentimental price of an emotional journey down memory lane; the exacting mental torment of swarming unwanted thoughts; or the incomprehensible fare of self-sacrifice that every spiritual aspirant must pay to move closer to the Dao.

When we strip fare of its earthly lights and seek higher, vertical insight, this hexagram leads us back to the very beginning, to Adam and Eve of Edenic time. In that sense, fare describes humanity's choice of food as told in the biblical Genesis parable about eating the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Fare then describes the price paid of being cast out of paradise, levied upon Adam, Eve, and the subtle serpent for breaking God's Law. It is a word that well describes the original cast of characters and the present-day plight of all breakers of Holy Law as fallen wayfarers condemned in Genesis to live as the spiritually dead tilling the soil of corrupted realms while also at war with each other.

The story begins with the following biblical fare, excerpted from Genesis:

16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die. (Gen. 2: 16 - 17, KJV)

Since most have no conscious memory of what actually transpired in Eden, we must sift through the clues given in biblical Genesis for the golden thread of Truth. Literally, the verse above tell us God's Garden offered bountiful food-fare with the clear command that eating from a specific tree was forbidden. The consequence for not following God's Will or obeying His command is simply-said: swift and certain death.

The story of Adam and Eve offers penetrating insight as a spiritual portal which demands to be carefully examined in a far more detailed way than this article. So herein, we use the linguistic instrument of fare or fair as an expediency to open a heretofore-closed gate, inviting revelation or gnosis to illuminate and bathe humanity's mind-heart with the vitally refreshing spiritual fare of God's Mysterious Sameness.

With that said, the next scene of this parabolic drama describes how Eve came to eat the forbidden fruit:

1 Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field, which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?

2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:

3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. (Gen. 3: 1-7, KJV)

So how does fare reveal the vertical path that ever leads one nearer-to or further away from God's Grace?

Considering the eloquent simplicity of this passage: it speaks about a certain vibrating fare ingested into the body which released its own fare of nutrients (knowledge of good and evil) internally that were then distributed throughout the heretofore-pure body(s) of Adam and Eve. This choice of dietary fare inserted dualistic contamination, pollution, and corruption into the blood-consciousness causing a swift mutation or change from whole-hearted trust in God, to seeking knowledge for themselves in order to become imitators of gods. What was originally God's All-Pervading Sameness suddenly became man's lopsided-differences, a 'you' and a 'me' emerged.

Another consideration is how the subtle serpent dished up emotional food as a tempting fare to entice Eve to break God's Law, which is a turning away from God or reversal. The verse tells us desire was stirred and aroused in her as she felt inspired to seek personal knowledge that would magically transform the Adam or Eve-self into a likeness of gods. Sadly, when Eve bit into this poison-laced hook, she came under the delusive spell of "appetite" which is ever-ruled by gain and loss and coerces what was once evenly-infinite to habituate in narrow tunnels of self-centered focus (or mirrors)-- all of which is a sordid imitation of Divine Purpose distorted into the high-sounding individualistic purpose of advancing, changing or improving the condition of the separate self. In other words, an unholy "appetite" began to burn in her belly the very moment Eve swallowed this fire-inciting fare.

Then, there is food for thought. The subtle serpent gave his opinion about why God made such a law and how foolish it was for Eve to obey God. The serpent had no Inner Authority to command Eve to ingest unholy food. He spoke his thoughts. She listened to his words - dining upon that fare of opinion, mentally taking all that in as new food for thought. Digestion kicked in and by chewing upon and swallowing the serpent's mental dish, God's Law and Truth were eliminated. Forgetting God replaced Remembrance as demonstrated when she next looked at the forbidden tree, she saw it's fruits as good and desirable.

The story tells of a similar scene with Adam, who also pushes away from Remembrance of God by feeding his mate's desire to become like gods, in spite of Holy Writ. By this, it is meant that not only did Adam dine upon the unholy fare of forbidden fruit, but that he also fed the flames of self-centered desire in Eve by following her example. This is a not-so subtle point that must be acknowledged because Adam is not an unwitting accomplice to be pitied. He made the choice to follow Eve, and by biting into the hook of fulfilling the personal desire that was now happily burning in Eve's belly, Adam also moved out of alignment with God's Will (Way) in a fundamental reversal that, as we know, wrought disastrous consequences upon him and all his generations.

Both Adam and Eve were given free-will choice to dine upon any of the fare in God's Garden, except one. Just as in this temporal world, every soul still has free-will choice about the fare they dish out to personalities, soul, and spirit and the fare they each consume. In that time, primordial man and wo-man threw God out the window and never looked back with remorse or repentance [according to Genesis, but it is hard to imagine that remorse never arose, isn't it?]. Rather, when awareness (or truth) of their nakedness in the sight of God arose in them, they exercised free-will choice again and tried to hide from it. So once again, through the force of their chosen will, they pushed further away from God, who as living Truth communicates with every part of soul via spiritual conscience as awareness.

Energy follows thought and what is thought upon increases. God was forgotten when man and wo-man pushed further and further away from His Kingdom through their freely-made choices in what thoughts they fed. When they stopped thinking about God and started thinking about themselves, more thoughts about their welfare, their advancement, their condition and so on suddenly blossomed. Thus, thorns appeared in God's Garden and all of sudden Eden was in danger of becoming a garden of poisonous hooks. Seeds of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil were taking root and beginning to perpetuate.

Fare best describes the supply and movement of energy. For example, false flattery and disingenuous social posturing is the everyday fare and common habit-food in certain cultures. It is dished out to others both overtly and covertly while what is true is carefully hidden behind a fig-leaf or veiling mask. Parents teach children to hide the truth behind whatever lie best nourishes personal success in the worldly sense. Practice or habit then becomes an imitative god ever widening its sphere of influence through indoctrination. Therefore, the wise are careful about what energies they suckle upon, what energies they nurture, and where they place their focus.

When Truth is sought as desirable food, imitation gods are seen for what they are -- upside-down inversions. When the spiritually dead attempt to imitate gods rather than surrender to what is naturally of God, wayfaring Law breakers on every dimension are fed by thought, emoting, and deed. Inversion or upside-down reversal away from God's Way is perpetuated by human habit. The reflection mirror sphere or world of self and selves becomes the desirable location and habitual vocation for those who energetically fed upon and are fed dualistic fruits. In certain spheres, deceit is cultivated to such a high degree that original Innocence and genuine spiritual vulnerability are punished under imitative law, whereas sophisticated costuming (the wearing of images) is praised and rewarded. In Genesis, the subtle serpent passed along the idea that God was not trustworthy, a thought-form seed that found fertile soil in Eve's desire-body and ready fertilizer in Adam's complicity. When Adam and Eve united as one to defy God together, regardless of who tempted whom with what, the energetic formation they symbolize flipped in the same way we can track the movement of a hexagram.

Every I Ching casting is an encapsulation of the Adam and Eve story, represented by solid and broken lines. Every hexagram is a mixture of original patterning. Within and behind every line is the ever-present opportunity to reverse or change from upside-down inversion to vertical, straight and true. Yet, so few understand that every line change is initiated by and with free-will choice. Choice becomes the conveyor belt or orbiting path, the fare that either moves one further away from God or closer to Him. Desiring to experience the knowledge of imitative gods is a torturous, burning belly-fire that can only be extinguished when Adam and Eve reunite internally and together Remember into God. This is the promise of the Aquarian Age, soothing waters to quench desire's flame. But this promise cannot be fulfilled until Adam and Eve join hands and willingly remove every fig-leaf and mask they have donned, standing naked before God.

What occurred in Genesis is a cyclic re-enactment throughout pan-humanity: the generations of Adam-Eve cosmos-wide. The ferrying sensation of evolutionary progress or movement that horizontally and ponderously spirals around Mountainous Transmission is the accepted habit in this universe, whereas the straight vertical ascent is not commonly discussed or encouraged. Why? Because reflection sphere entities with investments in the fare of selves would be starved when the Chalice of Holy Blood Energy is withdrawn from their hungry lips. Their castles and kingdoms in the dimensions of true-false, this-that consciousness will collapse. The residents in the mirrored tunnels of self-focus would be liberated. And the imitative kingdom of knowledge of good and evil would be empty. When it is understood that there is nothing to evolve because God, Whole and Complete Unto Himself, as Himself (or True Self) is neither progress nor retardation, not involuting or evoluting, the soul's transmigration across time and space becomes a journey of Remembrance or re-call. For fallen humanity, this necessarily means a return to the sanctuary of Edenic pristine purity, though it may take many more ages and epochs for such a change in Firmament to initiate. When fallen humanity ceases its feeble attempts to hide from God, when justification and blame rules no more, then Song hexagram's light can shine as a beacon revealing the equally-even All-Pervading One Life: God's Mysterious Sameness. The Middle Way - not the Milky Way -- will open and galactic pan-humanity can ascend in group formation.

The Genesis story goes on today as trillion-billions of soul threads in visible and invisible realms continue to feed the idea that they must continue to eat the fruits of good and evil for the purpose of becoming bigger, better, more improved imitative gods. They dine upon the horizontal fare of good and evil, hourly, daily, annually, lifetime after lifetime. They opine and feed that fare to others while readily ingesting opinions that match their own. Energetically like attracts like, groups or pods of "-isms" form, fenced off from others parts of humanity by high walls of self-satisfaction with "my" truth. In such a fragmented and polarized condition, there is no living, vital comprehension of the Yoga of Christ: "Love thy neighbor as thy self." And so not only does earthly humanity perpetuate its suffering, but collective pan-humanity suffers from ailments that all stem from free-will choices in how God-graced energies are exchanged, dined upon, dished out, stirred, chewed, swallowed, and eliminated. Each and every member of the human family is but a tiny fragment, a silken thread-like projection of primordial Adam and Eve, destined to pay the fare of toiling upon cursed ground as wayfarers on the wheel of death and rebirth until the fare of karmic retribution eventually opens the Way of Dao through earnest repentance.

It might be a very different world if readers of Genesis recalled that God did not command Adam and Eve to become like Him, at all. (Adam was created in the image of God originally, never separated, never forgotten, never in need of knowledge or non-knowledge). Fare or Song hexagram reveals the essential simplicity of Genesis: the fare one chooses to eat, multi-dimensionally and also serves to others is the conveyance by which fallen wayfarers are either ferried back unto God or remain in a state of delusion, fallen from Grace. Humanity is never abandoned. God's living wisdom constantly offers redemptive fare - as both needed food and conveyance, such as found in the meaning of Song hexagram: justice, truth. Not 'my' truth or 'your' truth or justice for 'me' or justice for 'you' -- all of which is precisely the same opined, individualistic food-fare that the subtle serpent fed to Eve. Rather, Adam-Eve or human soul is called to make the necessary fundamental reversal from faring upon good and evil by re-entering the Way of Truth, which is the Dao.

The missing "I'm sorry, God, that I forgot you" is the simplest, most heart-felt repenting prayer one can utter. A genuinely repentant heart invokes God's Merciful Fare into the mind-body with the same exacting swiftness as Adam and Eve invoked its spiritual death. When vital, living Remembrance that unwaveringly holds God at the forefront of heart-mind and sober consistent effort to realign to God's Will are, at last, reunited in the kingdom of the heart, what is originally True naturally stands naked in the sight of God. Grace, if one would but allow it, transports soul home.

The fare fallen humanity must pay is simple: "Thy Will, not mine." For thousands of years in preparation for the end of this planetary, solar, galactic and universal cycle, earthly humanity has been called by numerous divine messengers to once again obey the Law of Eden: to refrain from eating from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil which is the only thing that can stop perpetuating transmigration on the wheel of death and rebirth. Yet, in the present-day, who on earth can hear above the popular misguided cry: "Oh whispering subtle-serpent, feed me the secret of how to become like gods?" as is the chorus on the New Age spiritual circuit. To dine on such fare is to nurture the grounds of corruption, reap its fruits and freely feed one's energy to keeping man and wo-man far away from Eden's sanctity. Yet, for every silken thread of primordial Adam-Eve opportunity is only a heartbeat away, a free-will choice as it has always been.

Eventually in one cycle or another, critical mass will be reached when the sufficient portion of human soul can willingly offer up to God the fare of loving Him more than it loves "self". When the imitation self is starved and God is fed, then and only then can and will Song hexagram reveal its hidden potential: God's Mysterious Sameness has already paid the fare for humanity's return to Eden. In fact, He never left.

1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

2 Serve the LORD with gladness: come before His presence with singing.

3 Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture.

4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.

5 For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.

~ Psalm 100: 1 - 5 (King James Version)
