Online Journal devoted to the I Ching and Taoist Inner Alchemy
53rd chronologically, King Wen charted the wind-over-mountain hexagram,
Jian or Inertia, in this position to issue the first of
the four important hexagrams, as the means to utilize the four external
wheels: Thunder and Mountain of 51st and 52nd on one side as dual
masculine power, and Wind and Lake of 57th and 58th on the other side
as dual feminine flower.
King Wen knew the cycle of life well deep in his heart, something huge
would underline the 8 human progressive years from 51 to 58. Either in
general Chinese mind, or particular master enlightened in this land, 50
years old is a real deal. This deal tells us that when life reaches 50,
five elemental powers have been totally loaded and roasted on the road,
where each of these five takes about ten years to complete thoroughly.
The mile traveled is long gone, but the pile accumulated is taller than
personal sight or egoistic height. During this 50-year period, five fingers
have been busy grasping all sorts of points, five toes have been wheeling
extensively to send the person to highest peaks and lowest bases, and
five senses have driven life as a vehicle into a deadly state or peaceful
plate. 50 years of heart-driven and soul-longing sensory power have reduced
and retarded the person to the point that the used to be perfect eye-sight
is gone, taste buds are dull, hands are numb, ears cannot hear, and nose
smells the pale.
When the best and
purest sense cannot conquer the illusionary world, nonsense tells the
life to pay no more attention to sight, sound, taste and smell. All used
to be the powerful tools are really fooling yourself. And you cannot fool,
or conquer nonsense. It is from this point on, this stoppage beneath and
this footage below, one might hopefully understand the real power of primal
trinity. This trinity in our real world is decorated with exciting lights,
clayed with sensational fabrics, and toned with astonishing sound bites.
In the end, this trinity does not agree, please, or care for our basic
human senses. Three stands like a tree, or positions as a referee; but
in the end, it is free from the living green or believed agreement. Five,
on the other hand, dives the life and hives its live ingredients and sugary
juices into poison-free wine or potent spirit, only when you can arrive
to order, and survive to drink. The vile, that plies the ill up to the
villa in village, thrives all the way till an eternal will defeats the
vital village full of villainous violence. As the single V is doubled,
W grounds the victory inside Mummy's victor, V stands and
spins, like a fan, into a living cross. The little difference between
three and five merges between space and flow, creating a huge difference
between what is free and what the livelihood agrees upon the ever-green.
When green lands
flatly on even, yellow glows gladly through evening, you see that daily
temperature is more emotional, but nightmare is safely kept inside the
soul's remote-control. You also sense that even though seasonal climate
has more to say about her mating power, but your reasonable doubt doubles
your equal mates with your egalitarian dates into a fourfold inside the
living cross, so you can crawl over boss and loss.
Afterward, you may continue to attempt on your hemp-warped steps, and try any means to cling and climb upon your mate, something in you during all these years gets tired, or is retired. Even if you want to use marketable tools to rewire your youthful power, there will be little or no gun powder left to send to your mate as a surprising gift. The lubricating fluids inside your organic and emotional vehicle reach their lowest scales, and no replacement can be found.
Many a time you called someone as sir, and priced this fellow as a surplus from hello; now, you are surprised to notice that the thief has been hiding and sleeping for years enjoys the terrific nightmare. This thief steals all your sensory gifts, stills your sensitive thrift, and leaves you behind as a rotten bone or forgotten number. The lumber inside your muscles wants to fight and defend, but the numbed sense can not remember or relate to any skills trained and restrained.
At age 50, having loaded, stored, experienced and mastered a great deal, in every breath upon every inch-square of struggle, life itself reaches its highest harvesting state. You become a hard vest, allover. There is nothing new to learn, and equally, no further need to make something better or expect anything pure externally. In this state, which is a self-governing province or country, innocence becomes as peaceful as how stagnation would control retaliation. Passion is ready to be converted into compassion, unless you lost your internal compass. Strength that speaks a long time for the perseverance is going to be, if not already, defeated by the stage-5 and episode-9 entropy. Being grateful, thankful, humble, mortal, and surrendering to all are the textural colors and tinctured flowers of life you have saved.
Kids have grown up and gone, society provides little or no help, and life insurance waits for you to die and collect the profit as well as years of your payment. What can you do, upon this age? Star is useless but you want to be inside the light. Instrumental love has served her well throughout all those love-poisoning and love-liberating years, but you want to drink the elixir fermented inside the holy well of love. There is then a strong need for the real justice, a will that has never been exercised, a power cannot be matched by family rule or snatched through social justice, and a character cannot be defined personally or culturally.
This is the requirement, and this is how King Wen placed the four seasonal wheels - thunder, mountain, wind, lake hexagrams - for the next 8 years; just like what he did between 1st and 8th hexagrams, where the 1st opened the door on behalf of heaven and the 8th makes sense between spiritual sensibility and physical sensitivity. This ideal later adopted well by Confucius, where he phrased something like that "50 know the heavenly fate." From his 50 onward, Confucius did not study words in the I Ching as social and moral fabrications, but as gestures, nectars, and universal pearls. Without changing or editing anything what King Wen and his son did to I Ching, Confucius summarized his thankful gratitude with ten commentaries, and placed them carefully behind the text. Eloquently and skillfully, he chopped the names of the 64 hexagrams as his personal memorable chips, and monumental latter.
If we examine King Wen's chorological construction of I Ching, forward from 1st and 14th, and backward from 64th to 50th, six virtuous hexagrams are placed in. Given these six tools, only water of love (29th) and fire of passion (30th) are required to end the first 30 years of life and to being a new family life. Truly, life is a trivial jar inside a traveling car barred by, or barren with, juicy water and spicy fire. Therefore, 14th of Genic and 50th of Magic work together, and side by side, to compensate the six realms of life wheels. Earthly clayed life is a vehicle without fuels and fluids. Sun times and rimes the fuels, and moon lubricates and syndicates the fluids.
Now, with 51st, 52nd, 57th, and 58th given, the four hexagrams in the middle must be very crucial. If not, what can thunder ignite, mountain stop, wind blow, and lake evaporate? Beginning with everlasting will, not that the person has to be willful in each and every deal in daily life, but that the person must be grounded and insured with the will of heaven, life is ready to distill itself just like how mountain distills everything beneath its wind-stopped top. With this will power, distilling powder, something is boiling, simmering, refining, and purifying internally; just life the white blanket of snow covers everything on top and ferments each under. It is time to make your life and your self a holy wine.
How Inertia Wines?
The first time the
Chinese noticed and applied for "what mean Inertia," which is
a modern day scientific terminology, was through a water-wagon. Built
with a round circle and halting cups on the surface, a wooden water-wagon
rolls and wheels, as the river water flows. Like how we apply solar or
wind power today, and use running river to generate electricity, water-wagon
is the perhaps the oldest vehicle invented along log-boat. Measuring well
and calculating thoroughly, the inventor knew for sure how large the wooden
circle should be constructed, how many cups it should hold, and how big
each cup should be squared. The water-wagon should engage a sacred and
holy communion with the river flow. No addiction nor withdrawn, no excitement
nor retardation, water-wagon just rolls and spins, halts the water and
dumps it into the cannel leading toward rice fields. Seeing how the river
flow throughout the seasons, this irrigation device was constructed to
match and dance and leap with the flow. It was called Shui-che.
is the characteristic representation of water trigram, with a straight
solid line in the middle from top to bottom, and two broke lines on sides.
Visually, it is like watching the river flow between the banks of land.
A straight solid river water cuts through the plane, deepens into base,
and flows forward and downward.
This straight solid line of river flow becomes, in turn, the moon glow in the night sky, where land masses form the two broken shadowing lines, and moonlight flows through the physical sleeping line, mental dreaming line, and psychic traveling line. Therefore, structural image of water trigram is moon light between dark shadows of earth, river line between river banks, life line between male and female, and holy line between love and poison.
This is how the ancient Chinese defines the inertia - river flow, water flow, life flow, and love flow. River flows downward mountain to valley. Rain flows from sky to land. Life flows downward from head to toe, and love flows downward from the sugar-coded face into the depth of heart. River flow and life flow are more on the surface than rain flow and love flow. River flow and life flow form the horizontal team, and rain flow and love flow form the vertical beam.
Knowing this, the second idea flows into water-wagon. A wagon must be built in such a way and manner, that it turns around its circling loop along the river flow. If the circle of the water-wagon is too big, it will block or stop the river flow. This idea is utilized into constructing the dam, like bladder sitting at the bottom of pelvic valley. If the water-wagon is too small, you must as well use bucket to halt the water. Or you can just sit by the river bank, enjoy the sounds of flow, or looking at the clear water like a mirror to make yourself narcissistic.
This part of idea, to be exactly, narcissistic fashion displayed in the West, is water-jail in China. The power-controller would use cave water, or a house with water filled room, to handicap the will power of an awakened individual or uncontrollable figure. Placing this fellow into the water-chamber, his feet and toes will rust into the rotten food for rat or snake, and his knees and thighs will be decapitated by the ruthless water power. This is the downside of the water-wagon, but practically powerful as well.
The requirement is that the water-wagon must be in between land and river, peaceful view and tranquil flow. It is built in such a manner that water-wagon does nothing, except its small jarred mouths, 36 or so, are always open, swallowing the coming river, holding it as the wheel rises forwardly up, reaches at the top, and pours the water out, and spins backwardly down to repeat the same patter once again. 36 or so mouths attached upon the ring-lips of water-wagon become the measurement of jin: pound or gallon in that matter. The log was copped into pieces of pian, and framed into water-wagon cups, for the measurement of weight. Can you see the similarity between Pan and Jin? Afterward, and after harvest, rice replaces water-wagon cups, for the weight of Jin, in trading practice.
When Chinese invented the word che of wagon, they knew the wheels of God, the wheels of universe, the wheels of fortune and disaster. Structurally, there is sun stroke in the middle of che, and double cross at top and bottom to drag and pull sun-wagon. Since sun is the only dominant star in the sky, and the closest one to count on it, moon drags on it and earth pulls on it. Between dragging and pulling, sun pushes the two into a pool as a spoon, so we can have a noon on top of moon, and harvest from spring.
Beginning with water-wagon, the Chinese translated train as fire-wagon, and automobile as gas-wagon (maybe with the help of Japanese). In the Chinese mind, because of the invention of water-wagon, che of wagon or vehicle is instrumentally the representation of inertia. With forces on both sides, towards both ends, che does nothing besides the functional loading and withholding, unloading and rolling on the road once again. Loading makes the road, and withholding takes the road to be sold as old. Between road on one side and old on the other, che transports life and its crafted goods and gifted treasures, between emptying the birth to life and emptying the life to return. Che is the inertia, because vehicle moves through inertial, life exists between inertial, and creator sits inside the inertia.
Having the numerical value of 4, where wind trigram represents 3 and mountain trigram 1, Inertia of 53rd hexagram is right below virtuous Water of 29th hexagram, the top 4. Switching the positions, the 3rd 4 becomes mountain-over-wind, 18 of Decay or ferment. Next down, is thunder-over-earth, 16th of Excitement or Enthusiasm. The bottom 4 is earth-over-thunder, 24th of Return hexagram. The five 4s run from bottom to top are, 24th, 16th, 18th, 53rd and 29th.
Beginning with Return or Gui hexagram, and after 51st of Thunder and 52nd of Mountain, Jian or Inertial graduates with four 4s, by returning to the root of life, joyously following the passion, humbly fermenting the wine of life, and liberates as universal love and moon, from blood to milk, juice to wine, and wine to spirit. The resulting procedure is as gradual as Inertia, as steadfast as river flow, as peaceful as the cycle of season, and as grateful as passing through all human emotional and intellectual tests to really distill live events into wisdom truth and eternal joy. This is the result of Inertia, Wind over Mountain hexagram, to complete the first 4-numerically coded hexagram before entering the Kan or water hexagram.
Carrying on this value of 4 from the Mountainous Pyramid I, the Earthly Housing I places the wind-over-mountain hexagram as the returning spirit hexagram, the 8th hexagram of Mountain House. Solar wind, jet stream, as well as seasonal and daily wind slowly, but surely, takes away the hair (trees and plants) from the mountain top, to place either white water as snow, or shave the hair off it, so that mountain cannot grow any further, its peak cannot stand any higher, our peak experience cannot advance any longer, and our individual glory cannot sustain any more.
To chop the tree, shave the hair, cover with snow-blanket, Holy milk from universe begins as the mountain spring, to recycle the oceanic waves and tides, so that salt contained inside the ocean water cannot insult the virtuous power of love, rust the water molecule any further as how the water base is vested as the best and pure investment.
Truly the universe has its secret formula to produce wine, or any holy drink, so that all the holes, inside and around, will be filled, eventually, with its honey. Thus, Inertia is universal honey, produced from the bee of bees, queen of love, and the warmth of all wombs. To call somebody as honey, or to drink some beverages, where the bee has averaged from all the feminine rages, honey contains the extracted and dethroned horn on one side, and never no but always ney on the other side.
Therefore, each hole can glue a horn, or issue the clue of ney. With its original meaning from Greek, pale yellow, honey is better than milk, or love. When the fermenting process reduces the sunny canny poison, from the light prism, and when the distilling process takes away the ocean-based funny bunny salt, the result is honey from the bee, and spring from the snow, the unconditional love from cosmic firmaments.
Being said, Inertia, from the universal wheel between the eternal thrust inside and constant gravity on the outside, is the eternal milk of love, and forever sweetness of honey.
Then, why pale yellow, not bright yellow or golden yellow? Because it says, responds, replies, and reinforces all that is low, regardless how each raged animals yells, and how poisoned milk yeasts. Through this fermenting process, the shining brightness from the light becomes pale, like an old fellow dying into death bed or resting coffin. The voice from one's innocent smile and passionate youth, along all-empowering strength of the middle life, is ready to voice the pale, pale in facial expression, and male in character, and gale in quality. The ale does the work, dark than clear water, but not as black as night. Ale bails the gale and male, into pale, so anything still useful would be reduced into soundless speech, voiceless breath, and breathless peace. The will of heaven tells how to distribute the leftover, which is all sorts of illness, so that pale ale can reduce the color of yellow marrow, as well as golden crown, into pale face and case.
The external glow
of light in yellowish is gone, but the powder of yellow is still there,
whether it is the power of golden calf, or the flower of golden ceremony,
pale yellow tells them all, and honey explains each well. From
will to well, mountainous peak to oceanic tide, exploding wave to glorious
cave, honey is the product of inertia. Buddha calls the middle path, Confucius
defines this as central harmony, Lao Zi refines this as hollowing well,
and Moses recalls this as the kingdom of heaven. They all know and understand,
from experience to expert, that universal thrust is inert, and universal
love is inertial. Inertial is the flow of money, and inert is the power
